counselling approach

We all have times in our life when we could use some support, non-judgemental listening and witnessing of our true self

client as the expert in their own life.

It is my role to help you uncover what you may not know about yourself; your inner wisdom about how to deal with your issues.  I do this through listening, witnessing and suggesting tools based on counselling goals we will identify.  These tools are sourced through solid frameworks of social work theory, transpersonal psychology, trauma theory and narrative therapy, and through many years of experience journeying with clients.

Individuals commonly seek counselling for a range of issues including (but not limited to):

trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

sexual, physical or emotional abuse

depression

anxiety

loss of direction/sense of self

relationship difficulties

body and self esteem issues

eating disorders

substance abuse

parenting

grief and loss

general feeling of "something's not right"

past or current family violence

major life transitions

pregnancy and birth (including birth preparation)

post-natal depression

difficulties within the workplace

self-harm

mental health issues

problem gambling

family breakdown

communication difficulties

overwhelming feelings such as anger, rage, frustration, sadness and confusion

I believe that how you are reacting to the issues you are now facing makes complete sense to your body, mind and spirit.  Together we will find understanding and restore you to balance.

Each counselling process is individually tailored to your personal goals and needs, and is created together as the journey unfolds.  I am guided by what is happening in your process and what shows up around you in life.  While counselling happens within a structure of an hour session each week or fortnight, it is also a larger process across the time we work together, and what happens in between sessions is just as important as what we discover in our hour together.  How often you have sessions depends on you - what fits and feels right practically in your life, and what is manageable to allow time for you to process the content we are exploring.

Sessions may involve talking, or other strategies such as drawing, meditation, dream exploration, altered state (helping the body into a more relaxed state of consciousness allowing for more access to inner wisdom) or symbol work.

You will never be expected to do anything you don't feel comfortable with.  You are in control of the sessions at all times.

I practice transparency in my counselling processes and ideas, and encourage my clients to engage in an open conversation about what is and isn't working within the counselling process and relationship.

young people

young people

Counselling with adolescents to manage issues of trauma, grief, loss, anger, depression, anxiety, life transition issues, communication, relationships with friends, partners and parents

I love working with young people; their energy, honesty and fast-paced development.

Young people, like adults, need their experience of life to be heard and validated.  They sometimes face issues they don't have the skills to manage on their own.

By nature, adolescence is a life transition that encourages separation from caregivers, testing boundaries and developing a sense of independence that defines the journey towards adulthood.  Because of this, young people are more likely to talk to friends about their problems than the trusted adults in their lives.  However, sometimes adult support is needed to help them manage complex issues.

Young people are often facing issues including difficulties with relationships, communication, parents, friendships, trauma and abuse, substance abuse, power imbalances or mental health issues.  These issues can be even harder to navigate as they strive to find their individual voice in the world.

When the issues a young person is facing are stopping them from thriving, it can be helpful to have some counselling assistance.

If you are a young person, or you know a young person who could benefit from some counselling support, I encourage you to contact me for a chat to see what support I can offer.

group supervision

group supervision

Group supervision provides different possibilities for learning to individual supervision. As with any group, it can provide normalising and validation of your experiences as therapist.  Through hearing others' experiences, challenges and wins in the work, and sharing processes for expanding your awareness, your practice goals, self awareness and learning can be greatly amplified.

Successful groups are built on a foundation of trust, and to this goal we will incorporate agreements about confidentiality, non-judgemental reflection, authentic communication, self-responsibility and transparency.

Once safety and trust are established, your development within the group will be supported by processes including narrative reflective practices like ‘outsider witnessing’, storytelling, art therapy tools, dream and individual/archetypal symbol exploration and physical embodiment/ movement processes.

In group supervision settings, every individual benefits by engaging with, and reflecting upon, their own practice, no matter whose client/experience is being explored directly. Through group supervision, we can recognise themes in the work, our practice and identity as therapists, and benefit from the growth and learning of others.

Please contact me if you would like to join a clinical supervision group, or have a group of colleagues and would like me to facilitate supervision sessions for you.
